As you may have gleaned, today’s roller derby teams are all about having fun with stuff like zombie-themed bouts, Black & Blue formal balls, and lots and lots of blood and guts.

Of course roller derby and Halloween go hand-in-hand. Rollergirls are scared of naught, sending even the burliest of wolfmen running in fear. Rollergirls enjoy a good scare, a good prank, and a good joke. Many of the rollergirl names registered in the International database are very good puns!

Well, my darlings, today I’m offering a derby-themed prize! I will make up a roller derby name for you! Men as well as women can take part in this contest. I’ll do my best to make it original!

While the derby name of Debra in Troll Or Derby is actually just “Roller Deb,” that’s a little more vanilla than what I plan to come up with for y’all. Incidentally, you know why she ended up just plain ole “Roller Deb”? I think initially I subliminally named her that because “Roller Debbie” sounds so close to “Roller Derby.” When I was doing the edits, I made the connection and then it seemed like it HAD to stay.

Names as well as #s are important (mine as Derby City Rollergirl Tyra Durden was #8 for the 8th rule of Fight Club, and Deb’s is her age, as you can see on the cover). I gave some thought to choosing #665 for Deb’s girlfriend April, who skates under the name “Alma Steevil.”

Of course there are other punny names in the book. ”Betsy Won’t” & “Juwanna Kiss” are both tribute names to two real-life rollergirls, although those aren’t their exact names. I *did* use my friend Mace Frehley’s skate name for one of the characters in the book: the iron worker at the Troll Market. (If you’re too young to remember, Mace is a tribute name itself, to KISS member Ace Frehley:)
